Virgin America

So I’ve been M.I.A. these last two Instagram Travel Thursdays, but I’m back and so excited to participate again! This week, I am dishing about my favorite domestic airline, Virgin America. With 1,785 miles to go and 37,935 feet somewhere above middle America, I’m cruising at a ground speed of 517 mph on my way back to LAX from EWR. I like to humor my ego and consider myself “Virgin American royalty” because after all that’s how they’ve always treated our The JetSet Family.  Well, I suppose that’s how they treat all passengers, but I’m going to pretend for the time being otherwise. I wish I could take Virgin America to the prom, that’s how great it is.  (I will say though, the last few flights while the ticket agents who issue my boarding pass have been fantastic, I’ve noticed the gate and flight crews to be slightly obnox. I really hope this amazing airline turns down the ‘tude before I depart on my upcoming flights.)

It doesn’t hurt that right now I’m multi-tasking because Ocean’s 11 is on and let’s face it, I mean, c’mon – can a cross country flight get any better? Oh, yes it can. In addition to satellite Dish Network Channels, I just enjoyed a “Travel Light” cheese plate (you know how much I love my brie…) and I have plenty o’ leg room. The aircraft is clean, sleek & seksi, but most of all f-u-n. Did I mention that you can order food right from your seat, play some games, and chat from seat-to-seat? Pretty awesome, right? Yep, Virgin America is boss. So boss that they’ve made The JetSet Family Xmas card list because they have power & USB outlets in each seat – any jetset parent (and blogger’s dream) – bless their neon funkadelic heart.

Even the airport gate is pretty fly (no pun intended,) and they roll out the red carpet literally upon your arrival. At the ticket counter you have the option to bring your own earbuds or you can purchase for a nominal fee, Virgin America headsets in pink, blue or steel gray which would make any hipster blush. Aesthetics aside, Virgin America has edged their way to the top airline for domestic luxury family travel, well simply because no one else can compare. Sure there are other airlines I would recommend, and I have and will, but Virgin America is the one I would fly exclusively with my family when the option is available. They have raised the bar when it comes to air travel leaving no room for error.

Awe shucks, Virgin America, I think I’m in love.

I haven’t flown with Virgin America but for cross-Atlantic I love Virgin Atlantic, so I can relate. Sadly US-based airlines are the ones we always try to avoid for the lack of entertainment, good food or service. Even Air China ranks higher on my list than US-based ones… For Asia travel Cathay Pacific has been my favourite when travelling with kids, and the airlines does matter when the hours pile up…

For so long now I’ve wanted to try Virgin, and your post definitely just reinforced that! I mean red carpet… any other airline out there have that?

  • Lisa Goodmurphy September 5, 2013

Have never flown with Virgin America – will have to consider giving them a try. We fly almost exclusively with Air Canada.

  • Great story, Nicole.

    I’ve not flown them either.

  • Jess September 5, 2013

I keep wondering why airplanes can’t have outlets by the seats. I guess I just wasn’t flying the right airline!

  • Amanda Smith September 6, 2013

I have never flown. But if I do I know who to fly with. Thanks!

  • Nicole Howell September 6, 2013

Believe it or not I have never flown on an airplane but you make it seem like a relaxing and fun time. I may just get up the nerve to try soon……………

I’ve never flown virgin but heard lots of good things! Thanks so much for sharing! love the pics!

Virgin has indeed replaced my previous fave, JetBlue. The personal touches cost the company very little – they know exactly how to cater to the customer. Huge fan.

That certainly doesn’t look like the uncomfortable air travel I am used to. As an anxious flyer, I think I would fly more often if I knew the overall experience was more pleasant. Totally considering Virgin for my next flight!

  • Christy Maurer September 6, 2013

They sound like an awesome airline! I’ve never flown them, but if you wanna come pick me up on your next flight, I’ll come with you 🙂 We can watch Ocean’s 12 lol.

  • Jackie September 6, 2013

I have never flown with Virgin but if they’re going to roll out a red carpet for me then I’ll most definitely use them next time!

  • Diana Rodriguez September 6, 2013

    Great review!!

  • Jess September 6, 2013

I opted to fly Virgin America to New York a few years back and my entire flight travel life has been completely turned on its head ever since. I loved everything about the process. The design junkie in me loves the branding of the airline (::up top, Branson::) and the service, like you mentioned at the beginning, is pretty remarkable. ESPECIALLY for an airline. I’m just happy I’m in a hub city now and don’t have to book an extra “puddle jumper” flight to LA, just so I can book my cross country flight with the provider. Boo-ya!

  • Sharon Garofalow September 6, 2013

There is nothing like Virgin America! I LOVE ordering from my seat! Whenever I want. It is the little things, for sure. I flew Virgin to London years ago and was ecstatic when they started flying in the US. I still have some of the items from my little travel bag they give each passenger. 🙂

  • Maggie C September 7, 2013

It was JetBlue but man…I would go to heaven if I had wi-fi on board. That would be happiness to me.

  • Elena September 8, 2013

I have only flown Virgin America once and loved it for an IAD-LAX flight. Guess I need a reason to go to California again 🙂

  • Victoria December 5, 2013

Wow! Virgin have done a really good job. I’ve never flown them as you can’t use them in Berlin but the next time I’m in America, I might!
