My husband + daughter have this truly beautiful bond over football and the NY Giants. It’s a connection I will never fully understand because just like driving a stick shift, I have zero clue + a serious mental block when it comes to the sport. Even as a baby, she and Hubs would sack out on the couch at kick-off and spend their quality father/daughter time watching the big game + having a snoozefest (i.e. nap) in preparation for the start of the work week.
Eight years later, and the two still practice this seasonal ritual; however now they spend Sunday mornings together prepping one pot wonders like pulled pork sandwiches for the game later that afternoon, and save the leftovers for Monday Night Football. I have to admit, I might roll my eyes, and complain counting down the weekends until the Super Bowl, but I secretly love that this is “their thing.” She might look like a ballerina, but that kiddo has the heart of a Defensive End; and he might look like a Defensive End, but has the heart of a ballerina. What can I say that you don’t already know? I love my kookie family.
Those of you who follow us on Instagram and Twitter witnessed this bond unfold and come full-circle right before your very eyes. A few weeks ago, my daughter (8yo) met her hero, former NY Giants player + NFL Hall of Famer, Michael Strahan during a live studio audience taping of LIVE with Kelly and Michael at Disneyland all because she asked me while in line to send him a tweet with her photo and, “Let Michael know I’m here.” This kid…
During a commercial break, Kiddo was sitting pretty far back, but stood up while everyone was seated and gave him a quick wave. I will never ever forget what happened next. I actually still get choked up thinking about how wonderful he was to my lil’ one. He had just read her tweet before taping, recognized her and yelled, “There she is!” Before my husband and I knew what was happening, he jumped off stage, ran to our seats, and he even gave her his Yoda hat right off his head to take home. Later on that day he even tweeted her hoping she was enjoying her day at Disneyland.
She felt so special that day. She proudly told every.single.person, “Michael Strahan gave me this hat!” Grown men all over the park were green with jelly.
To remember this special day, I had this football customized with Michael Strahan’s New York Giants number, 92, and my daughter still wears her Yoda hat to sleep every night.
