I’m going to miss Blu. That’s the nickname we gave to the 2014 Kia Sorento EX that The JetSet Family has been test driving this last week. She was glorious. Right down to the stares she commanded as we gracefully navigated the dreaded pick-up line at the after school parking oobstaclecourse. Dads were curious, moms were envious, and the kids wanted to know all about JetSet Tot’s new ride. That’s how pretty she is.
The Kia Sorento was not only my constant companion running errands out and about throughout town, but we had big plans for Blu right from the start. With a packed weekend ahead, this SUV was about to experience The JetSet Family lifestyle. This was our way of seeing if she could really handle being our JetSetDrive. As many of you know, we are in the market for a brand new car, and I was lucky enough to learn over the last few weeks directly from the Car People at Edmunds.com how to properly test drive cars and what to look for, so I had a very detailed checklist in mind for this Sorento. How does it look? How does it sound? Do I like the feel and ride of a V6? Does my family and all of our belongings fit? How is it on gas (CTY/HWY is 18/25)? Does our monster Britax car seat fit? What options does it have and do I want/love/need them? All of these components would ultimately factor into a giant mental equation to see how The JetSet Family connects with the vehicle.
As soon as the dismissal bell rang, Tot and I pushed the automatic trunk closer button (that’s my terminology, not theirs,) and used the remote push start button (oooh, fancy,) to head up to the beautiful Langham Huntington Hotel in Pasadena. Our bags fit with plenty of room, the car seat fit nicely, and the whole family enjoyed the panoramic moon roof. It gave a whole new meaning to our “I Spy” road trip game.
As the driver, I felt the car rode beautifully, but the strong steady stops are what really appealed to me because it felt safe and in control. The car handled well in traffic, around the twists and turns of LA, and was not loud which is a big pet peeve of mine. The 6-speed shiftable automatic transmission was smooth and gave it that little extra oomph. This particular vehicle seats five with an additional third row seating option, but our test drive did not have the extra row. I knew this was a ride that not only I was going to enjoy driving, but I would also be a very happy passenger. This goes for 6′ 3″ JetSet Dad as well. He was comfortable and had decent head and leg room which was a bonus. Other features that made our experience all the more better were the soft beige leather seats with 8-way power, and which had both cooling and heating options. This was a dream come true for cold mornings and hot afternoons.
It was funny how I discovered features that I never would have considered before have now become a non-negotiable because of the 2014 Kia Sorento EX. I have determined I cannot live without rear parking and blind spot sensors. Especially, with the backup cam because I was able to swerve myself in and out of parallel parking situations like a pro! Saving so much time and frustration, this was worth it’s weight in gold. The turn-by-turn navigation was welcomed as well because anyone who has ever driven on the freeways of Southern California know “alternate routes” are a mother’s BFF. And I have become a true believer in climate control seats. Those are definitely non-negotiable.
Now we get to the fun stuff…the stuff that makes JetSet Mom happy. The Kia Sorento EX is pre-wired for the phone and has Bluetooth wireless data capabilities that made syncing my iPhone a cinch! The AM/FM in-dash single CD player was exactly what this mom needed for the days that commanded Prodigy and NIN, but auxiliary input and iPod integration for when Tot needed her Kids Bop. And truthfully, I don’t care if it is on a laptop, airplane seat or wall adapter, this JetSet Mom is a sucker for a USB connection!
In the end, The JetSet Family is very happy with the overall performance of the 2014 Kia Sorento EX and it’s made our short list for cars to consider. I mean you can’t beat style, comfort, safety in an SUV that can go from Orange County > Pasadena > Disneyland > Pasadena > Beverly Hills > Orange County mixed with traffic all under a half of tank of gas.
