On a recent tour of Newport Beach restaurants, we found ourselves at SOL Cocina on PCH. Now I easily consider it the best Mexican food in Orange County. But what does the rest of the JetSet Family think? JetSet Hubs loves Mexican cuisine, so serve traditional Baja dishes with modern twists and the freshest ingredients possible and he’s yours for life. This is exactly what happened during our recent lunch at SOL Cocina Mexican Restaurant in Newport Beach. I’ll never understand how I haven’t frequented the eatery sooner. I mean, we did live in Corona del Mar for what seemed like a hundred years, and I passed by the restaurant at least three times a day. Anyway, better late than never.
Let’s do lunch.
Fresh. Fresh. Fresh. Not only is every item made fresh from scratch on the menu everyday, but each SOL Cocina dish carefully embodies exactly what Baja is known for: fresh fish, slow-simmered meats, colorful salsas and most wonderful simple sauces. The sophisticated flavors infused with a serious surfer mentality is exactly why SOL Cocina is a Newport Beach favorite.
“The idea for SOL grew out of our many surf trips down the peninsula. We ate wood-grilled tacos and fresh seafood cocktels and ceviches at tiny roadside stands. We camped under the stars on pristine beaches and caught fish and lobsters to grill over driftwood fires.”
During our recent visit foodie tour of Newport Beach, SOL Cocina was kind enough to participate and invite us to try quite a few of their specialty dishes over lunch. Not only was the atmosphere of the the restaurant warm and inviting, but the dishes visually added such a fun burst of color to our afternoon. The plates were truly exciting and flavorful. Each bite carefully recreated a special Baja memory.
