This amazing weekend at Balboa Bay Resort was made possible by our friends at Visit Newport Beach.
Home sweet home.
The best years of my life were living in Newport Beach. It was the first place JetSet Hubs and I called home together, and JetSet Tot was born at the local hospital. Everything I love about California can be quickly defined by this vibrant seaside town and while I loved living there, it’s without a doubt one of the best vacation spots you’ll ever visit.
Always eager to return as a tourist, the fabulous folks at Newport Beach arranged a very special weekend for us to enjoy everything that this beautiful city has to offer. From enjoying down time with the fam, to eating our way through Newport, and the most amazing Sunday morning harbor tour, our SoCal beach weekend was glorious.
The Balboa Bay Resort was kind enough to host us for the weekend making this our home away from home for a few nights. Over the years, we have passed by this hotel countless times and until this day, we can’t figure out why we never stopped by. Needless to say, upon our arrival I was floored. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I never thought in a million years I would leave so impressed. I have without a doubt, found Orange County’s best kept secret.
Welcome to Balboa Bay Resort
What was JSF’s initial reaction upon arriving?
I was floored. Not only is the resort breathtakingly beautiful, but the staff was exceptionally wonderful. The lobby was absolutely beautiful. The aesthetic was brilliant. I loved the mix of glass and metals with a twist of updated mid-century modern. It reminded me of the exact place Don Draper would favor to visit while vacationing. Simply gorgeous.
How was JSF treated by the staff upon arrival?
Polite, courteous and most of all extremely helpful.
Did check-in go smoothly in a timely fashion?
Check-in was flawless. In fact, I believe it was one of the quickest I’ve ever had and I appreciate that.
Upon arriving to our room, what type of welcome amenities if any were waiting?
So there were no goodies; however two things really stuck out that made me giggle with happiness. First, was the view. Oh, my goodness. It made it hard to even want to leave my room. I could’ve sat on that balcony all weekend and still have had the best weekend in Newport Beach ever! Second, I spotted my remote control strategically placed next to the TV guide with Dave Grohl and Sonic Highways. Is this listed on my hotel profile? Before arriving, I was actually concerned for a moment that I was going to miss the new episode that evening on HBO! Can you say, “Best hotel ever?”
INSIDE ROOM C209
Premium Bay View Room
Was it big? How was it decorated?
The room was perfect. Clean, cool and plenty of space. I loved the decor and it was one of those rooms that the moment you walk in, you are pleased and know it will be a great stay.
Does it have a private balcony or veranda? How was the view?
The balcony was exceptional. This view was to die for and the plantation shutters was a great way to invite the outside in, without having to even open the door.
Was the bed comfortable? Enough pillows and blankets?
One of the best hotel beds easily. Fluffy pillows, pillow top mattress, and the ideal weight comforter.
Did the room meet JSF expectations? Did it have wi-fi, a/c, etc.? How is the mini-bar?
There was a small fridge, but no mini-bar. The a/c controls went down to 55 degrees which is rare in most hotel rooms, but very appreciated. Wi-fi signal was strong and I used it throughout our stay without a hitch.

The powder room
Was the bathroom big? Private? Does it have a tub and shower? How was the water pressure?
The bathroom was very spacious. Private toilet with stand alone shower and tub. The water pressure was fantastic, but use caution because it gets VERY hot, VERY quickly and will sneak up on you.
Are complimentary robes and slippers available for use during your stay?
Yes, two monogrammed waffle robes and slippers available for use.
Was the bathroom clean and orderly? Does it have a TV and phone?
The bathroom was very clean and orderly with lots of amenities. However, it did not have a telephone line or TV, but the soaking tub was so fantastic that I did not miss it for one second.
ON THE MENU at Waterline Newport Beach
How was the vibe and overall atmosphere?
Upscale harbor view. Beautifully designed and decorated and very inviting.
How was the presentation of the small plates? What stood out?
The House Roll with lobster, avocado, cucumber soy paper, chipotle sauce + yuzu soy vinaigrette was absolutely beautiful and tasted delicious. Definitely a must-try during your visit.
What plates do JetSet Mom + Dad recommend?
Dad went crazy for the play on pasta carbonara:”Squid Tagliatelle” sauteed California squid, pancetta, chive, parmesan, cream sauce and egg yolk. And Tot and I thought the Yellowtail Sashimi Pearson caught, avocado, daikon sprouts, radish + yuzu wasabi vinaigrette was out of this world. I am still kicking myself for not ordering more or some to go!
What is the tastiest signature drink at Waterline Restaurant?
We tried quite a few signature drinks at Waterline, but the one that really stood out was the Shandy in Bloom. Ready? Stella Artois, St. Germaine and muddled blueberries. Amazing.
Did Waterline Restaurant have any stand-out dishes on the Kids Menu?
Tot had the Coho Salmon with a side of pasta marinara, crudite and the best mini-banana split ever. As a parent, I thought the options were fantastic.
POOL + ACTIVITIES
What are the pool areas like? Are their lifeguards on duty?
I didn’t see any lifeguards, but there were two pool areas, one for hotel guests and another for members. Both were clean, had plenty of space and each time I checked, the members pool was much more crowded than the hotel guest pool. The beach was also a great spot with lots and lots of great shells to collect.
What type of activities are available for kids and families to enjoy?
Plenty for families who love to play on the water. Rentals are available for Duffy boats, paddle board equipment, kayaks and more.

What a special place. I loved every moment of our getaway at the resort. I would not only recommend this to family and friends, but you can bet we will be returning and booking a stay during the annual Newport Beach boat parade.
