‘AMA ‘AMA at Disney Aulani

Contemporary Island Cooking

‘AMA ‘AMA is Disney Aulani’s casual fine dining restaurant where children are very welcome and actually catered to and respected. I mean frankly, the are J.I.T’s (Jet Setters in Training)! Open for breakfast, lunch or dinner, we made a reservation for  6:15 and requested an ocean view table so that we could take full advantage of the beautiful Hawaiian views and soak in every moment of the sunset over the Pacific as possible. The rest of the evening only got better.

What we ate…

There was so many items I would have loved to have had the opportunity to try. As I glanced around at the servers bringing the diners seated next to us their meals, I was “Oooohing” and “Ahhhing” over the presentation. From the focaccia bread with butter sprinkled with island Hiwi Kai Black Salt from Moloka’i (dried on charcoal) and Alaea Red Salt from Kaua’i to the Island Seafood Thai Curry served with Japanese Eggplant and Choi Sum baked in a delicate Pastry Pouch served with Jasmine Rice, I knew I was going to be pleased with tonight’s dinner.

Everything was exactly what we had expected. But the star of the evening? The Kahuku Corn Chowder with crispy Taro and Lomilomi Salmon made table side. Remember how I mentioned Jet-Set Dad is a Foodie-In-Training? Well this dish absolutely floored him.

The ‘AMA ‘AMA Keiki Kids Menu for both lunch and dinner are a hit in my book. Children are served their choice of an appetizer, entrees and dessert, but this is not the place for fries and mac and cheese! Dinner for guests with a refined palate ages 9 and under include apps like Kahuku Corn and Taro Chowder or Garden Veggies with Yogurt Dip, entrees are a choice of Grilled Mini Steak with local veggies, Ham and Cheese Pizza, Grilled Catch of the Day with local veggies, Cheese Raviolis with Tomato Sauce or Crispy Chicken Strips with BBQ dipping sauces and local veggies. Finally, for dessert, the Jet-Set Tots can pick from Cookies and Cream Mickey Cookies Mouse served with a Banana Milk Shake or a Hot Fudge Sundae with whipped cream and sprinkles.

And then there was dessert…

OK, let me break this down. Every fine dining experience should include something fun and unexpected like cotton candy. YES! COTTON CANDY. Just because you are an adult does not mean you cannot enjoy something delicious and silly like an Apple-Guava Tart Tatin with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and topped with pink Li-Hing Mui cotton candy. OK, so we may have gone a little overboard with the mustaches. Or maybe not.

And no, it didn’t stop there. The chef sent out the most amazing Chocolate Cake with Ka’u Coffee Cream that we fought over every morsel and Caramel Chard.
