Love Your Bones: Protect Your Future

In anticipation of World Osteoporosis Day, The JetSet Family has partnered with Hologic, Inc. to encourage our readers to take early action and protect their bone health in hopes of preventing osteoporosis.

Fact: More U.S. women die each year from complications of hip fracture than from breast cancer. A woman’s risk of hip fracture equals her combined risk of breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer.

I had no idea. Did you? That’s a REALLY big number. In fact, that is how many women read my blog on any given month. Did that get your attention? Good, because it got mine too and that means it could affect any of us. When I first heard the statistics I immediately knew this was something I wanted to shine a big, bright spotlight on. I have hopes that whomever reads this post makes bone health a priority and take the following osteo-prevention tips to heart. By taking early action, you are protecting your bone health in order to enjoy life the fullest.

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF), here is what you can do to “break free” from osteoporosis:

Get a DXA scan: A DXA scan plays a vital role in osteoporosis prevention and knowledge is power when it comes to preventative care. Hologic’s DXA scan is a painless, non-invasive, 15-minute test to measure bone mineral density and assess for osteoporosis and body composition.

Know the Risk Factors: Age, gender, lifestyle, medical history, genetics, medication and medical conditions can all lead to bone loss.

Maintain an Active Lifestyle: Weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening exercises are great ways to protect against osteoporosis and broken bones. I personally love yoga, golf and swimming. To kick things up I’ll drop in on a spin class once a week.

Evaluate Your Diet: Calcium and vitamin D can be added to your diet with lean proteins, fruits, vegetables and healthy fats. What can you substitute or add for your next meal?

Live clean: To maintain good bone health, don’t smoke or have more than two drinks a day.

So what do you say? How about in recognition of World Osteoporosis Day, let’s agree to educate ourselves on the health and lifestyle habits that can better our bone health. The sooner the better, since our best chance to prevent osteoporosis and bone loss is right now in our young adult years. I love my life and I love you in it, let’s take this step together and get healthy.

Our partners at Hologic is sponsoring this post because the company is a leading developer of innovative healthcare products that enable women to lead healthier lives, everywhere, every day.
