Travel 101: Kidfluencing

Princesses, pirates and knights… Oh, my! Thank you to our friends at HomeAway  for sponsoring this post and introducing to us a whole new world of travel.

I was thinking “quaint” seaside getaway, she had more of a “fancy-dancy” castle in mind. The scene was all too familiar as she looked over my shoulder at the laptop screen while donning a plastic crown, pink feather boa and jeweled sunglasses that could rival Elton John’s. I was visioning a private beach, but clearly she imagined our next family vacay portrait to be taken in the rose garden of a fairytale château. Wait. Rewind. Now I need to come up with a château? How is this even possible? “Aren’t they all museums?” I wondered out loud. Let’s face it, when it comes to making Tot’s dreams come true I can’t say no. Like ever. I love every minute of it. Mission gladly accepted.

This was ultimately her grand idea so I wanted her to really take the reigns on the travel planning this time around. I understand she’s just eight, but this kiddo holds a whopping 33.3% of our family’s vote, and her “kidfluencing” opinion matters greatly to us. As I started to research the possibilities on HomeAway, it did seem like a far-fetched crazy idea after all. In fact, it was pretty rad.

HomeAway Kidfluencing Fun Places to Stay with Kids for family travel

Our family vacation planning quickly turned into a really cool mom/daughter bonding session one Sunday morning as we fell down the virtual rabbit hole made up of all the HomeAway rentals available. Before I we knew it hubs was involved. That’s the point in time we actually considered an island retreat for a brief moment. I don’t mean a tiny hut on the beach – we’re talking complete private island!

After an hour (or two…or three…) of studying the options, it was clear why HomeAway is the world’s leading online vacation rental market place boasting more than one million listings in 190 countries. With HomeAway we’re going from simply eating lunch inside the courtyard of a castle to a whole vacation in a whole castle with our whole family. SUPER-FREAKY-AWESOME!

Where to Stay with kids from HomeAway

I’m not going to lie, there’s even a small part of me secretly thrilled to take a rest from hotels. It will be a nice change of pace and give my wallet a well-deserved reprieve. This is going to be a fun experience! While I’ll probably never give up the pampering, nightly turndown and room service entirely, there’s something about the privacy and seclusion HomeAway offers that is appealing. I’m also looking forward to enjoying the overall space of a vacation home versus series of connecting rooms.

Whichever way you dice it, you have to admit the thought of sneaking downstairs at midnight to the “castle kitchen” in your robe for hot chocolate sounds simply: DELIGHTFUL!

Wish you were here.

A palace, treehouse, tipi or something unique like a windmill? Where would you stay?

WOW! That looks amazing!! Its perfect for a princess. I think my daughter would say she’d like to stay in the Cinderella Disney castle but this would come very close! A treehouse might be cool too for my boys.

How awesome is this. I have heard of Home Away before and meant to look into it. This would be a totally cool experience.

I would stay in a palace I think. It would be fun to explore a palace! I love to travel and seeing all the places you go makes me want to get out and go with my kiddo!

Oh I wish I could see the picture in your post, its not loading for me, but I can certainly see why a home away from home vacay sounds apealing. I stayed at beach house one time about ten years ago and it was the most relaxing time of my life. I think Tot was heading in the right direction. 😉

That looks like an amazing vacation rental. I love to stay at places this when we travel, very comfortable to stay in.

This would be a great place to stay with family! I would love to be able to travel to a place like this.

What fun! My kids would love to stay somewhere like this…and actually, so would I!

  • HomeAway is our favorite vacation rental search site, one that we’ve been using for years. While we never stayed in a castle (but just wait till MY daughter finds out there are castles on HomeAway), we did get some nice digs here and there. They’re generally bigger and frequently cheaper than hotel rooms. I don’t care about pampering, to be honest. I want SPACE! My husband wants a real kitchen (he’s the cook in the family). It’s hard to get that in a hotel room.

What a fun vacation rental! HomeAway is a great option for families for so many reasons.

That’s a tough question! A treehouse would be cool but I think I agree that real castle would be a very cook place to stay!

How exciting! We are waiting on the youngest of our clan to pass the 70 pound mark so we can spend the night in a treehouse and use the hipline (which has the weight requirement). We understand how kids have a wonderful vote, too. Will look into HomeAway for our next adventure!
