Heading on a Whale Watching Safari

Orange County Coast | Dana Point Wharf Whale Watching

This year for Father’s Day on a mission to do something “different,” we ventured to the seaside town of Dana Point on the California coast to meet up with our friends from Dana Wharf for a whale watching safari. It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon and the weather was perfect, it really was a great day to be out on the water.

Upon boarding the Dana Pride, Tot, Hubs and I headed up to the forward bow of the boat (at least that’s what I think it’s called,) and agreed that would be a great spot for us to hang out during the 2.5 hour trip. We knew we’d have some epic sighting out there in the big blue ocean, but I had no idea the three of us would enjoy it so much.

Even before we made it out of Dana Point Harbor, we were able to experience a few sea lions playing around one of the boat slips, and had the chance to see those Red Tuna Crabs invading the California coastline that have been all over the news. They were pretty cool.

Almost immediately after exiting the inlet, we spotted a sea turtle, which I enjoyed, but Hubs and Tot were on a mission to spy big fish. So we didn’t wasted any time and made our way up the coast passed Laguna Beach towards Newport because a Humpback whale had been hanging out and been spotted by a neighboring whale watching boat earlier.

Apparently, this Humpback has been traveling with packs of dolphins, so once the captain located the stampede “Stella” (which Tot fondly named the whale,) was not far behind. Just like clockwork, beyond the pack of dolphins came a waterspout from the ocean and we knew by the shadow in the water we had found what we were looking for.

This particular Humpback whale in the wild was at least 50-feet and weighing more than 75,000 lbs. I still cannot wrap my head around those figures. That’s a huge fish!

Even before we were back at the dock, we were already talking about our next trip. I would really like to see a Blue whale and I heard they are frequently spotted in this area during August. So I’m sure we’ll be back in a few weeks and I can’t wait!

That looks so thrilling. I saw a whale on a sunset cruise once in Hawaii but it was far away, we could see it spout water. This close would be exciting but a tad scary too! What a great adventure!

This is beautiful! My husband and I have always wanted to do this – something we plan on when the kids are a little older and we can travel.

  • This looks so cool! I haven’t been on a watch in years, but I remember as a kid- they were the coolest!

That’s so cool! I was once on a cruise where a school of dolphins followed the boat and loved jumping in its wake. It was pretty neat. Would love to see a whale or a shark!

Whale watching is such an adventure! The best is when they breach close to the boat. It’s absolutely amazing.
