Disneyland is a wonderland where dreams come true and magic is hardly an illusion. Just when you think you’ve seen it all, and canvassed every nook and cranny of the Disney Parks, something new and exciting awaits around every corner making you feel like a kid on Christmas morning. No matter how old you are, Disneyland Resorts embraces you to become that princess or pirate you dreamed of once upon a time, and this summer they have added super hero to that dream list. Enter: Summer of Heroes at Disneyland Resort.
“Mom, do you wish you had super powers?”
Well, any mom would chuckle at that question because clearly we all know being a parent is a job that requires many super hero powers, but its a question I think we’ve all thought about at some point in our lives. This summer, Disneyland has once again outdone themselves by giving guests the opportunity to unleash their inner super hero by teaming up with the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy inside Disney California Adventure Park featuring Heroic Encounters with Captain America, Spider-Man, and the fierce, Black Widow.
Summer of Heroes: Hero Up
When an email landed in my Inbox inviting our family to experience a special celebratory event highlighting everything Summer of Heroes had to offer I could hardly contain myself. I could not wait to share the news at dinner. There is something about Disneyland whether it is your first visit or fiftieth, that is incredibly exciting. The anticipation alone of seeing the word DISNEYLAND in big letters on the calendar makes the entire family exude a type of happiness that warrants a nightly, “Three more sleeps ’til Disney,” bedtime routine…even for us adults.
On the big day we knew we would it would be packed with fun and surprises, but had no idea we would be completely immersed in what you could consider the day in the life of your favorite super hero. From signature foods and fantastic attractions, to riding the new Guardians of the Galaxy-Mission: BREAKOUT! We couldn’t wait to merge the new with the classics take every single thing in still making time to visit our longtime favorites.
Pro Tip: Before you arrive download the Disneyland app for your smartphone for the most up-to-date information while visiting Disney Parks. The apps display wait times for attractions, character locations and times, dining options with menu selections and reservation capabilities, shops, restroom locations, shows, tours, and my personal favorite, photo pass locations for capturing the perfect photo souvenir.
The ultimate free fall Guardians of the Galaxy-Mission: BREAKOUT! was an immediate hit with the kids and would probably ride it all day long if we let them. And with multiple ride profiles, the adventures keep changing. But they weren’t the only fan, Hubs declared it his new favorite ride and was all about joining Rocket on his future missions to rescue the Guardians from The Collector.
Hanging with the Heroes
As we were exiting the ride, we caught “Guardians of the Galaxy Awesome Dance Off” with a special appearance by everyone’s favorite, Groot. The moment I caught Star-Lord and Gamora break out the retro boombox, I was hooked. Now I’m not one to give away spoilers, but let’s just agree that anytime you hear classic ’70s grooves you can bet it is going to be a good time.
Pro Tip: Summer of Heroes Groot themed food and beverages are perfect for lunch breaks and midday snacks. “I Am Bread” from Fairfax Market Place is not only adorable, but delicious, and you have not lived until you’ve satisfied your spidey senses with a Spider Bite Cinnamon Spiced Doughnut at Schmoozies.
Another attraction worth checking out is the Avengers Training Initiative. See if your super hero trainee has what it takes to be a recruit and join Black Widow and Hawkeye rise up against the evil HYDRA and save the world! In true Disney-style, this fast paced, action packed show will have viewers at the edge of their seats, and children vying at the chance to face off and prevail against the doers of evil.
Switching Gears: Cars Land
A trip to Disney California Adventure Park wouldn’t be complete without a proper romp through Radiator Springs. We were even lucky enough to catch a celeb sighting and newest star from Disney Pixar’s “Cars 3,” the one and only Cruz Ramirez! Someone was definitely starstruck!
Cars Land always leaves me in awe and I think I love riding Radiator Springs Racers just as much as I love photographing the landscape and town surrounding it. There’s something really special about it that always leaves me smiling, but I can’t help to wonder… when do you think they will realize they left the “d” out of Stanley Oasis 😉
“Here you leave today and enter the world of yesterday, tomorrow and fantasy.”
Truer words have never been spoken. The moment you walk beneath that plaque which hangs above the railroad trestle, and enter Main Street U.S.A., anything is possible. And I mean anything. Dreams come true, and no one knows this more than our family. Remember our day with Michael Strahan? There is a reason it is The Happiest Place on Earth.
There is so much nostalgia that goes along with a visit to Disneyland, and I’m excited to let you know Pirates Lair on Tom Sawyer’s Island has returned as well as Disneyland Railroad, Mark Twain River Boat, and Sailing Ship Columbia later this month all on the north bank of the River of America. Also returning is Disney’s longest-running and most popular nighttime spectacular, Fantasmic!
Pro Tip: Make the most of your time at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure by utilizing the Disney FASTPASS service for your favorite rides and attractions, and now available for Toy Story Midway Mania and Matterhorn Bobsleds!
Main Street Electrical Parade
But speaking of nostalgia, I’m heartbroken to report that this is your last chance to catch the nightly performances of Main Street Electrical Parade. The final run is August 20th, 2017 and this is something you are not going to want to miss.
It’s a very special part of Disney tradition for me personally because Pete’s Dragon was the very first movie I saw as a little girl in the movie theater, and I can remember being perched on my dad’s shoulders during my first Main Street Electrical Parade in awe of my beloved, Elliot.
And let’s face it, while we’re discussing lighting up the night sky, is there anything better than the “Remember…Dreams Come True” Fireworks Spectacular? This photo captures the magic in all of its glory and will always be a favorite of mine.
But The Night Is Still Young
And I have
three, ummm…I mean two kids that have just downed a Dole Whip and are ready to visit Captain Jack Sparrow and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Pirates of the Caribbean, explore the galaxy and quench their need for speed on Space Mountain, say, “Hey!” To their ghost buds at the Haunted Mansion, and of course ride Splash Mountain six times at 11:00 o’clock at night because clearly I’m winning the whole parent prize. Especially when you let drenched kids eat ice cream sundaes on Main Street at Midnight.
All in all? It was the BEST. DAY. EVER.
But that’s not all! Stay tuned because we spent the night inside the newly designed guest rooms at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and I have so much to share. It’s a longtime favorite of ours and soon to be yours as well!
And to All a Good Night…
