As the countdown to Record Store Day begins, I can’t help to think back to one of the greatest Saturdays ever. It was RSD 2011 and we spent the afternoon at Fingerprints Music in Long Beach, CA. The best part? Foo Fighters took stage at the tiny store and played their latest album at the time, Wasting Light, in it’s entirety. 2011 was a great year to be a music fan. Especially, if you are a Foo Fighter fan. I’ve said it a million times, that year they made experiencing music fun again.
It was also the day they released one of my favorite vinyls ever: Medium Rare. Don’t know it? You’re missing out. Big time.
This year things come full circle as Dave Grohl has been announced Ambassador of Record Store Day 2015. Pretty rad stuff. Sounds like the boys are up to it again. Foo Fighters will play a special show in support of Record Store Day 2015 in conjunction with releasing Songs From The Laundry Room on April 18th. The show will take place The Record Connection 32 Youngstown Warren Rd, Niles, OH. The 4 song, 10 inch vinyl EP will feature demos of Foo Fighters songs “Alone + Easy Target” and “Big Me,” a cover version of Kim Wilde’s “Kids in America,” and the previously unreleased “Empty Handed.”
So now rewind back to RSD 2011, I remember it was going hand-in-hand with the Toyota Grand Prix in LBC, so the streets were filled everywhere you turned, but the block in front of Fingerprints was pretty clear. Clear enough for the band’s 1987 White Limo to drop Taylor and Rami off. The crowd to get in was about 250 people deep, but that didn’t stop them from hanging outside for a bit talking to fans.
The energy was palpable.
Right before we went in, I walked to the side of the building to make a phone call. As I was talking, Dave pulled up on the most beautiful motorcycle I have ever seen. I mean it was really gorgeous. Anyway, as I smiled to acknowledge him and say, “Hi,” I couldn’t help to notice he scribbled the directions to the shop on his arm with a pen. I’m still not sure why I find this funny, perhaps it was just clever. That was the exact moment I realized, this was going to be one of the best Saturdays of my life. And it was.
April 16, 2011 was a great day.
