Tween Dreams: A Black & Blush Bedroom Makeover

Before and after bedroom makeover from Emily & Meritt Pottery Barn Teen

I want a Black and Blush bedroom. Her words. Not mine.

She must have seen it somewhere, if not, then this child certainly is on the right path to becoming the costume and set designer she talks about becoming.

Over the  summer we finally began to slowly tackle our home redesign and renovations beginning with Kiddo’s bedroom makeover. She has been so incredibly patient and started to drop hints a few times that she was getting tired of her current cornucopia of  “anything goes” motif. She was hoping for something a bit more sophisticated, cohesive and “tweenish” if that’s even a thing. All I know is I was game because I really wanted needed a home office and photoshoot area for work, so I knew it was time to move her into our larger guest room anyway.

Talk Less. Smile More.

I have to confess, I was secretly thrilled that she wanted to move away from the band posters, peace signs and Union Jack decorations. Not that I didn’t have G ‘N R, Corey Haim and Theater of Pain (talk about a motley looking crew…) photos glued to my elementary school bedroom walls, but she was looking for a more serene vibe with one non-negotiable: we must pay homage to Hamilton the Broadway Musical. Done. And done.

But where would we go from here? I’m just a true believe in less is more, but as a homeowner redoing each room I just wanted to make sure whatever her vision was, we’d have it completed 100%, corner to corner ASAP. Nothing to out of control, and I’m all about staying true to a “Less is More” attitude. Should she ever want to change things up a bit, she could always add small additional details and that should do it. Let’s just say I’m so glad I stood firm on the “getting it done ASAP” part because there were quite a few things placed on backorder and took over a month to arrive.

So we did what she and I do best and headed straight to Pottery Barn Teen at South Coast Plaza and worked with their team of designers for inspiration. It didn’t take long to for Kiddo to fall head over heels for what she nicknamed the “Bed of Roses” collection from Emily and Merritt with gold highlights. It was not only beautiful, but looks like it was made especially with Kiddo in mind. That alone made letting her take the reigns on this major redesign so much easier.  Now I went from 95% control freak to about 45%. People, this is a HUGE deal! Baby steps.

She verbalized that she wanted the focal point to be her new bed and she had one specific request: Lots and lots of pillows. That’s easy, I could accommodate that, but I had no idea when she meant LOTS she was talking Khloe Kardashian amount of fluff. Have you seen that episode of KUWTK? Don’t lie, I know you’ve caught it at least once, anyway, Khloe has something outrageous like nine pillows on her bed.

But it was the one unique spin JetSet Kiddo took that really impressed me. She wanted each of her throw pillows to resemble one of her favorite bands or musicians. So she opted for a bedazzled lightning bolt for David Bowie from (Pottery Barn Tween), Dave Grohl in what she thinks is a Alexander Hamilton uniform (Society 6), Skull and Roses for The Grateful Dead and GNR (Pottery Barn Teen), and a few more just because she liked them.

As for the ones she would lay her pretty little head on for a good night sleep, well I grabbed three dual packs of Ralph Lauren pillow inserts and covered them with The Bed of Roses pillow shams, Black and Blush good morning / good night pillow cases, and Emily and Merrit black and white stripe pillow cases all from Pottery Barn Kids. I only purchased the striped cases and not the complete sheet set with flat and fitted sheets because Kiddo hasn’t used a flat sheet ever, and I found a solid black Luxury queen fitted from Overstock.com that might be the best linen I’ve ever felt. One tip I found very useful from the Pottery Barn Teen designers, use not one, but two duvet inserts to get that full look.

I think for the most part, everything came out beautifully. Hubs did the crown molding and we used: Brilliant White (walls) and Black Dose (molding) by Ralph Lauren Paint. Inside her closet, we chose to wall paper the space with the same black and white chunky stripes to compliment her Emily and Merritt Circus Stripe curtains

To decorate the bare walls we picked up a few RIBBA frames from IKEA and ordered prints featuring Kiddo’s artwork, a magazine cover she did last year, and quotes from Hamilton and Roald Dahl from Etsy. This was an inexpensive way to gussy up the room without spending a whole lot. It would also allow Kiddo to keep complete creative control because she could switch out the prints as she wishes. Hubs also came home with awesome arcade lights to spell out her name.

One of the touches I love most that Kiddo asked for was for Hubs to paint the inside of her closet with stripes. I cringe to think of how time consuming that task would be, but he found easy-stick wallpaper in the exact black and white circus stripe she was looking for. It looks amazing and we got white no-slip hangers from Oh, Joy! These hangers have been amazing. She has very limited closet space and these hangers are ultra-thin leaving much room for all of her clothing with space below for a large clothing hamper and shoe organizer.

Over on her desk, we surprised Kiddo with the new Apple desktop computer that she’s been saving up for as an early Christmas present. I’m so glad we did because she’s already gotten so much use out of it and it even came with these awesome rose gold Beat by Dre. Now she has a place to showcase all of her favorite classic books like Little Women, Emma, and Alice in Wonderland right next to her prized possession, a gold sparkle lava lamp
