Day In The Life

#RefreshersRun

Consideration has been provided  by our friends at Starbucks Refreshers™.

Song: The Other Side of Summer by Elvis Costello

My morning starts out pretty routine, you can definitely say I’m a creature of habit, and never is when I’m all smiling wide-eyed and bushy tailed whistling Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah. I can barely open my eyes which are still glued shut from last night’s dreams as I manage to shuffle across the floor,  find a pair of (semi) clean yoga pants, and somehow make it to the kitchen where I wait patiently for the bright morning sunlight to pry my sleepy eyes open and wake my brain.

Song: Touch of Grey by The Grateful Dead

OK, that’s better, but I still need something else. So I hit play on my favorite online playlist, and begin scrolling through a quick mental checklist in my mind, that may or may not go a little something like this:

“What day it is? Are the lunches packed? Did I go over homework? Is her backpack ready? Where’s the sunscreen? What time is that conference call? WHERE. IS. THE. SUNSCREEN? Oh, CRAP! Today is half day schedule, what did I do with her swimsuit for practice? Ugh. Oh, snap – the car payment is due today, isn’t it? Bank. I must get to the bank. That’s fine, I can swing by the bank on my way back from picking up my outfit for tonight’s event at the dry cleaners. OK. What time is it? She needs to get up, ‘Kiddooooo…Good morning!”

If that chaos is not enough to wake me up, and get me going I’m not sure what is. But I could still use that boost. So as I run out the door in something poorly resembling a messy bun, Birks and dark sunglasses with a piece of burnt toast hanging out of my mouth as I fiddle with the radio. I glance up briefly to make sure her seatbelt is buckled through the rearview mirror and then when she stares back with those big blue eyes, I say, “Starbucks?” As though I already don’t know the answer.

Song: Keep The Car Running by Arcade Fire

As I approach the counter, our friendly neighborhood barista flashes her pearly whites and says, “Your usual  Venti Very Berry Refresher with Fizz?”  But as of late, I’ve adding to my order by stocking up on a few cans of Strawberry Lemonade Starbucks Refreshers™ to keep with me for the remainder of the day. With a revitalizing blend of sparkling fruit juices, b vitamins and ginseng, Starbucks Refreshers™ has all the goodness you need to get the most out of today.

Song: Joker and The Thief by Wolfmother

One can is the perfect boost for that afternoon lull I hit daily right before it’s time to brave the school parking lot pick-up lane. By the way, that mom blaring Queens of the Stone Age and Nine Inch Nails as a carpool battle hymn? That’s me.  Those who’ve been there understand the need to be mentally prepared when navigating through a sea of mini-vans, swagger wagons and SUVs. Soccer moms are no joke people! It’s every man-woman-and-child for themselves!

Song: When I Grow Up by Garbage

Fast-forward. Kiddo is home, practice is over, schoolwork is done, dinner served and now I need to get ready and hightail it up to L.A. for an event. No rest for the wicked, it’s going to be a long night which calls for assistance from that little can of happiness I scored earlier today at Starbucks. I grab a straw so that I don’t mess up my freshly applied  lipstick, but the only one I can find is an oversized squiggly straw my daughter got in a goodie bag earlier this week. People who pass me on the freeway are going to think I’m adorable as they see me slurp my Starbucks Refreshers™  from this straw on-the-go.

Song: High and Dry by Radiohead

At last. Finally, I’m home. It’s been a typical 18 hour day, but sleep is overrated. I check on kiddo one last time, and she’s sound asleep before I go and smooch the hubs, “Goodnight,” wash my face, brush my teeth and double check that Siri is set to wake me up in six hours to do it all over again. Rinse and repeat.

Song: Better Things by The Kinks

If you haven’t noticed, I live + die by playlists. They set the tone and rev me up on a moment’s notice. So I thought it would only be appropriate to call this one: Day In The Life Of Me.
