Driving slow on Sunday morning, and I never want to leave.
As the blinding bright sun peeked through that one sliver of hotel blackout curtain that I can never get right, the three of us were snuggled in bed wiping the sleep from our eyes and laughing hysterically reliving one of the best weddings ever.
It was the morning after Jeff + Emily’s nuptials at Orcutt Ranch and there was only one thing that could make this weekend even better, brunch! But this was no ordinary brunch by any means. This was the brunch I’ve been chomping at the bit to try for the last few years. This was brunch at Executive Chef CJ Jacobson’s Studio City restaurant, Girasol, and we were about to preview dishes off of the recently introduced hyper-seasonal menu.
The name probably sounds familiar, right? Well for my pop culture cronies and fellow Bravo fans, those Bravo fans like ourselves, CJ Jacobson is a two-time Top Chef alum known for his farm-and-forest-to-table concept as seasonal ingredients are mostly hand-picked at local farmer’s markets and foraged in the Angeles national forest by Chef Jacobson himself.
For the first time, Girasol is introducing a three-course Sunday Brunch prix fixe menu (including bottomless mimosas or poinsettias as well as a special offering a child-friendly “For the Little Ones” menu with delicious kid-friendly favorites like Bacon & Cheddar Biscuits, Mini French Toast and Eggs & Pancakes.
So feast your eyes on the dishes we shared. I’m not going to lie, between the three of us there may or may not have been a slight fork-to-hand stabbing once or twice positioning for that last piece. Whoops.
From the moment we took our seats we were welcomed with house baked bread with lovage herb butter and jams. I tried the tomato spread and it was everything I had ever hoped for and more. It was such a treat.
Each dish was presented was an absolute superstar in it’s own right, but we each felt an undeniable bond to a specific one. For me, I didn’t stop at one. There were a few that I really stood out.
For me, it was the Beets and Berries Salad with goat cheese, farmers market beets and fresh berries, hazelnuts, herbs and lemon. I don’t even have to mention how beautifully presented each dish was, because you will notice a common thread throughout all of the dishes when it comes to plating. Each dish is more picture perfect than the next and it is clear that it is something Girasol takes exceptional pride in.
Then there was the Hamachi with sea beans, white fir + wild sorrel broth. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this dish. This is one of the plates that the three of us fought over every last bite. Be warned, Kiddo + Hubs will play dirty when needed. Absolutely, delicious.
And then came Hub’s favorite course, but there was a clear cut tie when it came to seeing where his loyalties lie. At first, he couldn’t get enough of the Fried Chicken + House Pancakes with house made buttermilk pancakes and maple syrup, but when he didn’t know, was just moments later Chef Justin would be serving up some Bread Pudding French Toast.
Yes, you read that correctly: Bread-Pudding-French-Toast with seasonal berries and maple syrup. Let’s just say that daddy was a very happy man.
But what about Kiddo’s favorite? Shouldn’t that french toast have won over Kiddo’s heart? Well it did, but let’s face it, she’s no ordinary Kiddo. Out came the Grilled Octopus Salad and it was game over! No really, as in we wouldn’t have had a shot at even tasting it once Kiddo staked her claim on it. So Chef took it to the next level and made Kiddo her very own Octopus Salad with roasted eggplant, little gem, rosemary, ask oil, sweet & sour chili, and toasted lovage.
And Kiddo was happy.
I didn’t think it was possible without stretchy pants to taste one more bite of food, but when they plunk down a plate of Donuts Strawberries & Cream, you make miracles happen. You find space inside you that you never realized existed.
Not only was it the perfect ending to an amazing dining experience, but a miracle a brawl didn’t break out over the last bites of house made donuts with fresh farmers’ market strawberries, toasted pistachios, and sorrel vanilla cream gelato.
